This sticker says,"Your brakes are retarded."
Started bleeding the front brakes on the Guzzi today and the bike has a linked brake system. The right front caliper runs off of the handlebar master and the left front caliper runs off of the rear brake pedal.
This may work fine for normal people, but my pegleg riding style prohibits the accurate use of rear brakes. I never use them. Now I have to plumb up a new front system and block off part of the rear.

February 1 and it was 50 something. Met a guy in the morning and sold him an old aluminum Evinrude motor. He owns a chrome shop in East Hartford and is going to trick it out.

Rolled up to Stafford to hook up with Nate for a ride.

We took the backroads just above the state line in Massachusetts. A wasteland of swamps, sandpits and pine barrens. No traffic, but just plain ugly to look at. Total opposite of the previous day's wanderings. Started to rain so we stopped at Barnstorm Cycles in Spencer, Mass.

After our visit we headed back into Connecticut and stopped at Turtle's for lunch.

The roads of Woodstock took us back to Stafford.
Nate asked me to give him a hand relaying his bike to his new apartment in Vernon. It got uncomfortable when his ex was already home from work. Sucks to be friends with both halves of a bitter break up.

Winter has been weak so far, and I approve.

Temps in the 40's today, so I took an after lunch ride. Explored the back roads between the Connecticut and Thames Rivers. Lots of colonial period houses, barns and narrow lanes. A couple even turned to gravel, but I was at explorer speed today, not Isle of Man speed.
Stopped at Giant's Neck Beach and grabbed a few sea shells for my kid. The coveted nautilus shell was in short supply. Every example had been previously pillaged by the hungry flock of seagulls loitering on the beach. Two high speed Acela trains passed each other on the bridge overlooking the beach.

As the sun got lower in the afternoon sky, it got a bit colder. I headed back to Mudville via Colchester. There was a small bike shop I was curious to check out. I haven't been there sine '99 or so. Back then it was a sketchy, unlicensed joint selling salvage bikes. Now the place is nice, with a selection of lightly used repossessions and a service department. There was a 1980 Guzzi CX100 Le Mans with a retro 850 Le Mans fairing, but the price was out of line. He wanted $6,000, which is the price range for a genuine 850 Le Mans MK1. Got home around sunset, then rode to work at 10pm, on the last day of January! So much different from last Winter.

Colonial Mill turned into country estate. Still had its own dams and millraces. I have never been on this Lyme road before. Lyme is famous for the deer tick disease.

Middle of Winter and the locals here still give you the hairy eyeball when you visit this beach.

Cool, but too expensive. Guzzis should always be cheap.

Butch & Bonnie fired up the Sportster after a year of no love. Sounded real good.

Winter 100

Got in 100 miles today. Almost died as a backroad turned to jello-like defrosted mud without warning at 40 mph. Saw the lowest mileage Bimota ever and some other cool racing bikes at a small bike shop in Woodstock. Mint for January 24.

NYC Bike Show weekend.

The weekend started off on Friday. I got a deal on a battery to get the Road King running. It was nice to ride it around after 3 years of being apart. Friday night we had a taco dinner at the club. Turned out to be a fun night closing out at the strip joint.

Winter is pretty long, but show promoters are pretty dumb. The big Progressive show was in New York this weekend. The two local motorcycle expos, Kev-Marv and Springfield, decided to schedule their events this same weekend, 25 miles apart. Because of them not working together, the spectator is almost guaranteed two thinly stocked shows to choose from. Idiots. We chose to drive to NYC in a snowstorm to spend our time and $15.

Got done with the show, caught a cab down to East Village. On the recommendation of a friendly chick working at the comic book store, we ate at Paul's, da Burger Joint. Freshly ground beef burgers, served up big and fast. We then returned to our 42nd Street hotel to rest up for late night drinking. Bars in NYC don't close until 4am.

Otto's Shrunken Head was the spot we chose. Good, loud dive bar filled with weirdos and rock & roll. Many drinks, almost a bar room brawl and chicks with light up snakes in their hair. r During the debauchery we ran into a guy Eldorado knew. After closing time went with Chris to Odessa Diner for 5 am breakfast.

I was just amazed that we were able to score a decent hotel for $120, including inside parking. New York gets the reputation of being a hard ass place filled with jerks. This weekend we met nothing but kind, polite and fun people, including the cab drivers.

Now back to the grind and get focused on the Moto Guzzi and getting the fleet registered.

We had amazingly warm weather today, 52 degrees and sunny. The Black Ice that coated the roads was melted by noontime and 40 bikes rolled out of the clubhouse. A great way to start the year.

The District

Instead of my typical Bike Week vacation, I took off the week between Christmas and New Year's Day to spend some time with my kid and give his grandparents a much needed break.

I pondered what to do and where to go. Florida and the Disney thing would be too much money and too much driving.

I reached back into my cloudy memory and grabbed onto Washington, D.C. I had taken a school trip there when I was in eighth grade and have ridden through it on my bike a couple times. Knowing the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum was there was enough to convince me. Maybe Max would learn something would serve as an added bonus.

I went online and found a room at the Beacon Hotel, and hoped it would not be a bedbug infested slum for the $89 a night fee they charged.

Max and I loaded up Wednesday morning for our first road trip together. The driver's window had jumped off of the track in my Dad's Lincoln the night before in Boston, so I took the Pennsylvania route to avoid the numerous toll booths on I-95. No traffic and Max didn't make much squawking for the long drive.

Found my way through the city to our hotel. The crazy traffic circles and curvy streets took a bit to get used to. The streets were well marked, but you have to choose your line in the circles to get to the right outlet. Some took a couple laps.

The Beacon was nice and we got an executive suite, I only hope the online company doesn't rip me off on the bill. We valet parked the car and settled in for the night.

The general consensus around Mudville is D.C. is a few blocks of white, marble buildings surrounded by dangerous ghettos filled with violent Negroes. I was amazed to find it a cosmopolitan city, clean and filled with an interesting mix of modern office buildings and 1800's mansions, townhouses and statues. Everyone was, for the most part, friendly and helpful. The rudest people were the suburban, American housewives and their rude kids.

We walked down to the White House, Washington Monument and a few of the Smithsonian Institution's great museums. We also figured out how to ride the Metro subway system and took a drive out to the amazing Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.

I really enjoyed my trip, especially with the luxury hotel for Motel 6 prices. Max was excited about the Washington Monument and seeing the Enterprise Space Shuttle. I hope the memory of our first adventure stays with him for a long time and inspires him to try and repair our failing country.

Sprockets are 21 & 45 - cruises great on the highway at 70mph. Disc breaks front and rear, avon venom tires,1970 frame, raked and hardtailed. Front tubes are 4 over with Norman Hyde fork brace, 1950 Tiger Cub gas tank,had foot clutch, hand shift, changed back to regular style for sale will include other parts This is a strong bike that runs great and stays together. Been on many long trips including being the first pre-1986 Triumph in America to complete the "Saddle Sore 1000" (1000 miles in 24 hours). Won trophies with this bike and it turns heads everywhere. Finished moving into the new place on Friday. You never really know how many T shirts you have until you move. I shitcanned a large number of them. It was a difficult process. Each shirt is a postcard from a time or place in your past. I even threw away my first ever Harley shirt. It was given to me by a co-worker back in 92. We were both looking for a bike at the same time. I was researching the lexicon of Milwaukee and had decided I could afford a 70's FLH. He quickly bought a Sportster 1200, messed around with it for a while, got bored and sold it. He gave me a shirt that the dealer gave him. An evo engine on front and back with lightning all over. I kept it in my dresser until that day in March of 1993 when I bought my shovelhead.
Other rags reminded me of past girlfriends, almost forgotten road trips and even dead people. Throwing away memories.

After I lugged the last garbage bag full of my worldly possesions into my new flop, I headed down to the clubhouse for Murdercycles steak night. We had a nice crowd, considering it was raining.

Saturday was set up for the Ty Rods Swap Meet at Stafford Speedway and today was the 6am wakeup call to go sell some junk. Thin crowd, but a warm, sunny day.

Funniest momemt of the day was when we were leaving. Trying to snake the dually through the half empty rows, I ran over a metal beer cooler.
"Fuck, Guy! You ran ovah my coolah!" said the victim in his Rhode Island/Fall River accent. "Gimme twenty dollahs."

I said,"I'll give you twenty, but you gotta give us two dented beers."
"No way, twenty five", said Mr. Fall River.
Chet and I got out of the truck and the terms of our twenty dollar deal were quickly accepted.

I can't wait to ride my bike tomorrow, 3 days away from it and I need it like I need sleep..

Finished up my tenth 100 mile day by having a good breakfast at Zip's Diner out on Route 101. Good service and highly recommended. Then I rode to my new apartment to sign the lease. I totally broke down when I was inside and saw all of Max's mother's things and the hand painted notes to him from her. It's gonna be a rough transition from motorcycle playboy to full time dad.
